El Otro Lado

The El Otro Lado Mission

El Otro Lado is a unique mission-driven program at San Miguel High School. It seeks to raise awareness about migration, emphasizing values of equality, inclusion, social justice, diversity, and respect for all, considering that migration is a human right.

This program provides Lasallian students with the opportunity to explore the US/Mexico border and learn about the complexities of migration to change negative stereotypes and stigma surrounding migrants.

Through these five immersion days, students and participating staff members learn about the hard journey our brothers and sisters who cross from El Otro Lado endure. In addition to informing participants of the hundreds of migrant deaths that occur in the Arizona desert, the El Otro Lado allows students to interact with humanitarian aid groups, legal attorneys, border patrol agents and those directly impacted by US immigration policy.

El Otro Lado fosters community between San Miguel students and visiting schools by exposing participants to the variety of political, humanitarian, and theological viewpoints that surround immigration and encouraging participants to explore strategies of response. El Otro Lado students attend presentations by members of Southern Arizona’s humanitarian aid community, visit a US border patrol station, and volunteer with bi-national faith-based organizations.
