Parents,
Update on January 14th parent group meeting:
Mrs. Mejia-Garcia is sponsoring a group of students from Louisiana who will be in Tucson February 16th through Feb 20th as part of an immersion program. She is looking for volunteer families who would be willing to house a student for the four day time frame. If you are able to assist, please contact her at mejia-garciaa@sanmiguelhigh.com.
On Friday March 26th there will be an event called “Elegant Night - fashion show”.
This event allows San Miguel students to see and purchase donated dress attire at reasonable prices in preparation for the April prom. It also will allow middle school students the same opportunity to acquire attire for their Middle school graduation ceremonies. In conjunction with this event, the parent group will be preparing and serving an “elegant” spaghetti dinner for all attendees. We need your help once again,
In donating any clothing items, food items for the spaghetti dinner, and your time in assisting with the preparation and serving of the spaghetti dinner. “Elegant Night” is a wonderful opportunity to share food and fun with your San Miguel community.
At our next meeting on Thursday Feb 11th at 6:00 p.m. we will begin planning the details and assignments for the Elegant show spaghetti dinner. Please come join us. Carmen Del Cid will be putting together a flyer for the upcoming newsletter requesting clothing donations for the fashion show. Based on the response, we may need help in sorting and preparing any donation for sale. Additionally, the thought is to create a clothing bank with any unsold items that can be made available to all San Miguel students.
Lastly, thanks to all who have signed up and registered their Fry's cards. As of Jan 8, 90 cards have been registered and have generated $50,000 in sales to date. San Miguel earns 1%, so a check for $500 should be arriving to Brother Nick's attention in the near future.
Thanks for your support and keep shopping at Frys!
An invitation to join the San Miguel Scrip Program
Click on the above link to see what merchants are available.
SCRIP is simply a word that means, “substitute money,” much like gift certificates from national and local retailers. Many popular retailers participate in our San Miguel SCRIP program including Wal-Mart, Lowes, Wendys, I-Tunes, Payless Shoes, JC Penneys and many, many others.
You earn money for our school without spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars with SCRIP at the stores that participate in the SCRIP program. SCRIP can be used for just about any household purchase including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline, and even dining out. The community purchases SCRIP from San Miguel at the face value of the card. San Miguel purchases the cards from retailers at a discount off the face value of the card. The funds raised will be used to support student activities such as LaSallian Youth, Student life, summer programs and athletics.
How can I help support San Miguel activities?
There are two ways to purchase scrip:
- Every Friday after school, parents will have a table setup where cards can be purchased for the most popular retailers such as Walmart, Lowes, Wendys, Blockbuster and El Charro restaurant.
- On Fridays after school, drop off an order form along with payment in cash or check, and receive your order the following Friday. Our order form contains a large variety of retailers and can be viewed online at the San Miguel Website or we will have forms available on Friday afternoons.
Additionally, we will be having a December Scrip event to assist you with your Christmas Gift card giving needs.
Come support the San Miguel community by buying and using SCRIP for your everyday purchases. Please stop by with any questions you might have on Friday October 30 as we kickoff the San Miguel SCRIP program.

Organization: Advice for Parents
Developing good organizational skills is a key ingredient for success in school and in life. Although some people by nature are more organized than others, anyone can put routines and systems in place to help a child "get it together." Here's a list of strategies that you can use to help your child get -- and keep -- his life under control.
- Use checklists.
Help your child get into the habit of keeping a "to-do" list. Use checklists to post assignments, household chores, and reminders about what materials to bring to class. Your child should keep a small pad or notebook dedicated to listing homework assignments. Crossing completed items off the list will give him a sense of accomplishment.
- Organize homework assignments.
Before beginning a homework session, encourage your child to number assignments in the order in which they should be done. She should start with one that's not too long or difficult, but avoid saving the longest or hardest assignments for last.
- Designate a study space.
Your child should study in the same place every night. This doesn't have to be a bedroom, but it should be a quiet place with few distractions. All school supplies and materials should be nearby. If your young child wants to study with you nearby, too, you'll be better able to monitor his progress and encourage good study habits.
- Set a designated study time.
Your child should know that a certain time every day is reserved for studying and doing homework. The best time is usually not right after school -- most children benefit from time to unwind first. Include your child in making this decision. Even if she doesn't have homework, the reserved time should be used to review the day's lessons, read for pleasure, or work on an upcoming project.
- Keep organized notebooks.
Help your child keep track of papers by organizing them in a binder or notebook. This will help him review the material for each day's classes and to organize the material later to prepare for tests and quizzes. Use dividers to separate class notes, or color-code notebooks. Separate "to do" and "done" folders help organize worksheets, notices, and items to be signed by parents, as well as provide a central place to store completed assignments.
- Conduct a weekly clean-up.
Encourage your child to sort through book bags and notebooks on a weekly basis. Old tests and papers should be organized and kept in a separate file at home.
- Create a household schedule.
Try to establish and stick to a regular dinnertime and a regular bedtime. This will help your child fall into a pattern at home. Children with a regular bedtime go to school well-rested. Try to limit television-watching and computer play to specific periods of time during the day.
- Keep a master calendar.
Keep a large, wall-sized calendar for the household that lists the family's commitments, schedules for extracurricular activities, days off from school, and major events at home and at school. Note dates when your child has big exams or due dates for projects. This will help family members keep track of each other's activities and avoid scheduling conflicts.
- Prepare for the day ahead.
Before your child goes to bed, he should pack schoolwork and books in a book bag. The next day's clothes should be laid out with shoes, socks, and accessories. This will cut down on morning confusion and allow your child to prepare quickly for the day ahead.
- Provide needed support while your child is learning to become more organized.
Help your child develop organizational skills by photocopying checklists and schedules and taping them to the refrigerator. Gently remind her about filling in calendar dates and keeping papers and materials organized. Most important, set a good example.
