San Miguel SportsSAN MIGUEL HIRES RENOWNED TUCSON COACH TO HEAD UP ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT DECEMBER 1, 2009 – TUCSON, ARIZONA – Melissa Wheeler, Athletic Director for San Miguel High School, announced that she will be moving to Phoenix. During her tenure at San Miguel, Melissa transitioned the school from partial to full membership in the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), hired some outstanding Lasallian coaches, organized parent volunteers, and empowered coaches to take part in fundraising efforts on behalf of the school. This enabled the athletic department to accomplish a great deal with few resources. San Miguel is grateful to Melissa for her boundless energy, good humor and common sense. Melissa’s last day will be December 18th. San Miguel is proud to announce that Rich Alday has been hired to replace Wheeler as the school’s new Athletic Director. A native of Tucson, Rich graduated from Tucson High in 1966. He was the Head Baseball Coach at Pima Community College from 1973 to 1989 and the University of New Mexico from 1989 to 2007. As such, he won over 1,000 games at Pima and UNM combined, winning the Coach of the Year awards at Pima in 1981, 1983 and 1985 and at UNM in 1991, 1996 and 2000. Capping off his illustrious baseball career, Rich coached the United States gold medal baseball team in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and the bronze medal team in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. “We feel so blessed to have a Tucson institution like Coach Alday share his passion and vision with our young student athletes,” said Leslie Shultz-Crist, President of San Miguel. San Miguel is a private, Catholic high school that provides a quality, college preparatory education to students from families of limited financial means. Students take a full course load, while at the same time working in entry level positions at local businesses, earning approximately 60% of their school tuition. Since its inception in 2004, 100% of the students in San Miguel’s first two senior classes have graduated, 100% have been accepted to college, and they’ve been awarded over $6 million in scholarships and grants.
