NAHS Silent Auction
6-7pm in the Art Studio

San Miguel High School will host its second annual Celebration of the Arts Friday, March 12th, from 5 to 7:30pm, at the San Miguel campus, located at 6601 S. San Fernando Rd. The event will kick off with the induction of the National Arts Honor Society (NAHS) members, and will feature student performances and demonstrations, hands-on art activities for the whole family, an art gallery, poetry readings, raffles and the sale of NAHS members’ artworks. All money raised from the sale of the artwork will be used to fund further NAHS events. Celebration of the Arts celebrates the creative spirit of San Miguel students and the community through a variety of art activities guaranteed to engage the senses! Put on by San Miguel students, this event is free to the public, in an effort to raise the awareness of the arts in our community.

So come on out, enjoy the festivities, and support San Miguel High School and its students

Over the past seven years, our Principal, Br. Nick Gonzalez, has been the driving force behind the growth of San Miguel High School. As the founding Principal and second employee, he was instrumental in all aspects of our extraordinary expansion over such a short period of time. His leadership, vision and commitment to the entire community have yielded great dividends for our students, parents and the Tucson community at large.

Some of his many accomplishments during his tenure at San Miguel include:

  • Being one of 10 high schools to receive the 2010 National Association of Secondary School Principals/MetLife Foundation “Breakthrough School” Award based upon dramatic improvements in student achievement accomplished by those living in poverty. San Miguel was the first Catholic high school to receive this honor.
  • Creating a culture of high academic expectations within a student population that may not have seen themselves succeeding in educational and/or career-related endeavors
  • Graduating 100% of the senior class in both 2008 and 2009
  • Being a co-recipient of the 2009 Elizabeth Ann Seton award for his significant contributions to Catholic education in the Diocese of Tucson

At the end of this school year, Br. Nick will return to El Paso to spend time with his mother. Please join me in congratulating him for a job well done at San Miguel High School. Clearly, he will leave behind a void that will be difficult to fill.

As the President, I am committed to finding a replacement for Br. Nick who will continue to build upon the Lasallian foundation that has been laid, and who will continue to move our academic program forward. A search committee is being formed with the goal of hiring a new Principal by the end of this school year, to insure a seamless transition for the 2010-2011 school year.

Please be assured that the guiding principles established by Br. Nick will be utilized as the starting point for any new hire. The strength of San Miguel High School is a legacy that Br. Nick leaves behind for all of us to build on. We are truly blessed to have had such a passionate leader for our community!

Quilt

Los Desconocidos quilt project is another opportunity where our students can display their lasallian charism. This is a project where students can display their artistic skills while being conscious about the migrant deaths that are happening in our backyard. I will be starting this quilt honoring the migrants that were found in the Tucson sector last fiscal year (2008-2009) this week. Please join me in making and promoting the quilt. I have 208 sqaures that need to be decorated with a persons name or with the word "Desconocido" or "Unknown".
